Women’s Environmental Leadership Australia (WELA) is an independent not-for-profit organisation and a vibrant community of women transforming Australia’s response to the environmental and climate crises.

WELA was founded in response to the ongoing failure of leadership in Australia to effectively address these pressing challenges. The environmental and climate crises cannot be solved by the same outdated leadership models that contributed to them—models that have enabled environmental degradation, entrenched inequality, and marginalised diverse voices.

Research shows that when more women are involved in decision-making, environmental outcomes improve. Women’s leadership tends to be collaborative, networked, and deeply connected to communities—qualities essential for navigating the transition to a sustainable and just future. However, significant barriers continue to prevent many women from stepping into leadership roles.

WELA is working to dismantle these barriers and amplify the leadership of women driving change
